Growing up, I spent lots of time outside playing a lot of different sports. I really enjoyed being busy and being active. As I got older a few of the sports fell off as responsibilities of life started to come in. I got my first exposure to gym life with my first job working at a big gym. There, they encouraged us to immerse ourselves in the gym and participate in all of the areas the club had to offer. I really enjoyed it, especially weightlifting. Over the years, I would continue to work out off and on – but I always felt like something was missing. I stumbled onto CrossFit in 2014 and have not turned back since.
I have sort of had two real turning points in my CrossFit life.My daughter had been walking for a short time, and my wife and I decided to take her to Disneyland for the first time. I did not realize how much work this would be for Dad at the time – carrying her around the park and spending hours hunched over walking around the park. When I got home – I was physically wrecked. I knew right then, I had to make a change. I needed to get in better shape to be there for my growing daughter. The second was more recent, because of the restrictions during Covid, most gyms wouldn’t allow for you to bring in Kids while you workout. For me that was a deal breaker because my daughter is my gym buddy and I usually had her with me. I did the best that I could in my garage while that was all happening – but it was not the same. I found myself falling out of all the good habits that I created. This lasted until 2023 when I said enough…and have been on a journey back since then.
Being active and involved in CrossFit has helped me in more ways than I can say. After some gentle encouragement from a coach I decided to go take the Level 1. I enjoy being able to share CrossFit with others and have found that I enjoy just as much being a part of their journey as they have been in mine. It is truly rewarding to see people grow in the gym both physically and mentally – to be able to do things today that they couldn’t yesterday.
